So I was wondering about when you are on the main page, or whatever it is called, it tells us like 121 guests and 6 invisible users have been on today.
one- Why haven't they joined???
two- Sometimes I forget to log on, is that a guest, or an invisible user?
and three- I realize very quickly that I forgot to log on because you can't see very many posts. Most of them are from months ago. I know we all wanted some privacy settings to this, unlike the other site, but I wonder if that is what is keeping people from joining. It looks (if you aren't logged on) as if no one is posting!!!

I thought the site went quiet when we all gate crashed the site.... I guess I sort of answered my own question when I logged in to post this reply. Ugh! I've missed a bunch. Off to catch up!

I think guests are those who have not logged in. Invisible users can see everything - they're lurkers. I wish we could disable that ability.

I never stay logged in so every time I come to the board, I am a guest. It only counts unique users once, so if you do that 17 times, it will still say that there is a guest when it happens but in the overall count down there (where it notes users in the past 24 hrs) it only counts each person once. ie. I log in hre a few times a day but I only count as one of those users in the past 24 hrs) Like IMM, I wish we could disable the invisible user thing.

Like already said, guests are people that either haven't logged in or don't have an account. If I remember correctly, they can only access the boards that are in the "Site Information" area.
Invisible users are those that do have an account, but have opted to be invisible when they do log into the site. That option is found in your profile.

Invisible user means you can't tell when someone is online or offline, you can see their posts when they post but you can't tell when they are logged in or not. I'd be fine with that option going away too. It feels very lurker-ish.

121 guests are probably spam bots too. They often flood this type of boards, which is why there is usually option to type the words as you see them on registration page. You know the one where random words are written and you need to write them too? Spam bots can not do it, so only real people register.

As mentioned previously, guests are mostly people who are already signed up but not logged in yet; perhaps some people arriving here from a search engine who then leave when they realize that you have to sign in to see posts (except the Site Information section). Not much I can do about the invisible users . . . I don't see a way to disable that function in the admin screen. If I could, I might consider it. On the other hand, on most discussion forums, everyone's invisible, and I guess I could see why someone might feel more comfortable having the ability to browse without openly announcing her presence. Of course, nobody's invisible to an admin, so if anyone starts using her powers of invisibility for evil, I can look into it.

Ok. So when I come on at first, I am logged as a guest. I see. Still, there are many more guests than users in a day (meaning some don't log in). I just don't want anyone thinking this site is lame. :-)

I don't mind invisible users... Maybe they just don't want to be bombarded by PMs or whatever while they're on. I do that on FB (made a special list of people who I don't mind seeing me online), so people won't start chatting with me when I'm browsing my news feed for a minute in between cooking dinner or changing diapers.
