How public is this board? Can it be viewed by anyone, or do you have to register to even see posts? For me personally, I would kind of like to see if by visible only to registered members. That would give me something I can't get on IMLM, which is being able to talk about things I am hesitant to have visible to the entire world.

Right now, it's set to be viewable to everyone, but you have to be a registered member to post. It is possible to set it up so that you have to be registered to view it.
The only concern I'd have about limiting it is that people may want to browse a bit and get a feel for the site prior to signing up. Then again, the restrictions are board-specific, so we can actually set up certain boards to be member-viewable only.
What does everyone think? All public, all private, or a mix? I suppose we could keep the Site Information category open to everyone so people can see the rules and what we're all about before signing up, and then the rest of it could be members-only.

How are you going to gather members? Word of mouth? I am ok with all public until the board gets pretty active.

It would make me feel more comfortable. Just sayin

Honestly, if someone wants to see what is said, it is not that hard to create the new account. With that said, making it somewhat private does make false sense of the security and creates cozier atmosphere. The bottom line is my vote goes for some privacy.

One benefit of having to create an account to access the board is that the posts within the board are then harder for search engines like Google to access. Right?

It is public to read, yes. You cannot post without an account though. I know because I have to log in every time I come to the board.

I like the idea of some privacy mainly because my sis came upon a comment I made on "that other site" while searching for my moms business and it caused a whole big fight in which i asked my mom to drop me off on the side of the road so I could walk home (and it was not in such a nice part of town).

I just tested this out. I was wrong about posting. You CAN post without an acount. All you have to do is write a name and click "agree to terms of service" and put in the code word thing. I am NOT LOGGED IN right now. I assure you that it's the same Mama T though. I'm not so sure about the ability to post without at least having to create an account. Going to log back in now.

I'd love it if we could somehow make it more private.

I think I would like it better if people had to join in to be able to read.

Maybe we should do a poll to see who would like the board to be public or more private? Just a thought.
