Hello! Just wanted to officially confirm that there's no way in the admin functions that I can see to read other people's PMs, nor would I do it even if there were. Members' PMs are 100% their own business, unless they specifically choose to notify me.
Do be aware that when you send a PM, however, it belongs to the recipient, and while we can have a rule about not posting PMs here on the site, I cannot stop them from posting them elsewhere (Facebook, blogs, personal sites, emails to other people, etc.). So it is worth bearing this in mind when sending a private message that you feel could compromise you in some way if it became public. The ones you RECEIVE, however, are completely private unless you or the sender decide to publicize them.
Even if requested, I will not become involved in routine arguments or disputes over PM. However, if anyone is actually threatening or stalking you while using this site's resources (PM, public boards, etc.), you are welcome to send me a PM and I'll issue a warning if I feel that the other party is abusing the system. I would need for you to copy and paste the other person's PM in a message to me though, because again, there's no way for me to access other members' PMs in the admin system.
Hope this clears things up!

BTW, I was an assistant moderator on MLM until this past winter, and I know of no way in their admin system to be able to access members' PMs. The only way would be if a member actually gave us her password (no way to look that up either that I know of) and we logged directly into her account. Unless they've changed something, or someone in charge has actually confirmed that they're viewing PMs, then I'd consider that just to be a rumor.

indybg - the board server is ProBoards. They're just the ones who provide the web hosting. They DO have a certain set of basic rules for the content we post, which is why we can't have a sex chat group here - it violates their guidelines against graphic language. But I'm pretty sure it's just a bot they have looking for certain words. There are no actual moderators or admins assigned to this board except for me. (Although I may need to recruit some assistants at some point, but that will be well publicized if/when it happens.)

Thank you very much for the frank information, Jen. I found a thread about PMs on the IMLM from either Angela or Christina stating they can open PMs on the site. That info came straight from them---I do not believe they go searching for PMs to read, but perhaps if there is an issue and they are alerted. Again, thanks!

Thanks to all concerned. I was considering PMing someone to share my personal contact information (name, phone), but, since I learned IMLM CAN access your PMs and it isn't necessarily private, I was hesitating. Yes, I am a "lurker", b/c I have had very little free time lately due to kids home in the summer. yet another reason why I'm glad my account over there is deactivated

Holy crap . . . a lot's changed over there, then! I think the fact that they're actually admitting doing it is pretty shocking . . . but then, I probably shouldn't say too much. I would hope at least that they'd have to have a really, really good reason to be doing it, although I can't personally think of any myself.

Jen, thanks, I do know that info, but T confused me. Board server can not read PM's. True. But if you own the server (which is not the case here), you could set it up in a way to be able to read pm's. It is time consuming, but possible.
